Autumn 2021 is inspired by ‘J is for Joy’ from the McCartney A to Z Manifesto – an optimistic, energetic, colourful vision progressing forward, elevating performance wear archetypes and refocusing them with softness, sensuality and fluidity. Made for Stella women with an active spirit, the athletic functionality of skiwear gives way to a dynamic fashionability. The result is an exuberant collection made with 80% eco-friendly materials; the brand’s most sustainable to date.

The season is energised by a bold use of colour across varied and vibrant shades of pink, green, blue, red, orange and yellow. The freshness is balanced with a neutral palette of camel, khaki, grey, butter, cream, navy, ink, black and white. Texture is central, felt in soft recycled polyester Teddy Mat and smooth Alter Mat vegan leather.

The sensual sport of skiwear inspires multicoloured forest-friendly viscose dresses, recycled nylon jackets and sliced knits with wide shoulders and narrow waists, youthfully belted with bum bags. This vibrant colour story is elaborated on by bodycon floral dresses in a stretch organic cotton jersey, riffing on patterned 90s swimsuits. A sporty moment is felt in leggings and an updated ‘STELLA’ graphicacross oversized Teddy Mat coats and matching jacquard fleece sets.

Taking cues from military cuts, workwear and winter sports, organic cotton patchworked trousers are paired with coordinating tops. A grey galaxy wash denim with hints of colour and white stitching brings a utilitarian energy as a jacket, rounded trousers and all-in-one. Brand icons are cinched, including Stella’s signature tailoring, exaggerated all-in-ones inspired by functional jumpsuits, oversized Koba Fur Free Fur coats and loose, short dresses.

Bringing balance is a paired-back tonal wardrobe including a collared trench and shrunken 1940s-style blouse, form-fitting and voluminous trousers and short dresses – refined with white contrast stitching detailing. Encrusted lace serves strong shapes and a joyful, whimsical wave in Stella’s signature free hand to a series of dresses in black and lemon yellow.

Energising a sense of movement, activeness and comfort, knitwear includes clean, compact knit tracksuits balanced by traditional British chunky knit Aran and classic Stella intarsia jumpers. A playful relationship with texture is felt in mixtures of Fur Free Fur and furry knits, combinations of shirting and sweaters and a dichotomy of exposed metal zips and soft wool.

While the majority of Autumn 2021’s styles are eco-friendly, Stella hascurated a capsule collection of core conscious pieces. Titled ‘Stella Sustainable’, this range of archetypal products comes together to form a complete wardrobe solution.

Vegan and cruelty-free bags include the iconic Falabella, playfully exaggerated as an oversized Maxi edition for Autumn 2021. Frayme is a bold new style remixing classic brand codes, with a chunky chain strap that runs around the entire bag as well as a statement medallion inspired by artist Carl Auböck. Capturing the optimistic sportiness of the season are bright, patchworked Fannee belt bags with bungee cords and buckle closures in recycled nylon.

The Logo bag has also been refreshed in new colourways, including a mixed-material canella Alter Mat and biscuit Teddy Mat edition with gold studs. Zipit streamlines sporty bum bags in smooth Alter Mat with utilitarian exposed pockets and zips, while the Hobo tote is revisited as a smaller rounded style available in camo blue and Mackintosh versions.

The sustainable Loop sneaker is in step with a BMX aesthetic, with the updated ‘STELLA’ graphic on technical knit uppers in calf and over-the-knee heights. The iconic Elyse platform shoe is revisited as a slingback, closed-toe clog, while the Trace Clog and Air Slide capture an elevated-yet-effortless attitude with Fur Free Fur linings. The Emilie Chelsea boot is reimagined in statement cowboy iterations alongside a new Emilie Teddy with a light micro sole and cosy fleece lining.

The effortless sensuality of the Ivy over-the-knee boot, with a rounded square toe and block stiletto heel, is in sync with the edgy pointed toe and exaggerated metal zip of the Zipit – both in vegan Alter Mat. The iconic Falabella chain is incorporated across a range of new styles, including a cruelty-free heeled boot and ballet flats. Carryover styles include the Eclypse sneaker, Trace Boot and Skyla bootie.

Continuing Autumn 2021’s joyful colour story, Blob earrings have an organic, handmade feel energised in vibrant shades and elevated with embedded crystal details. The iconic Falabella chain is reimagined as a bicolour silver and gold chunky necklace and bracelet, and contrast-toned earrings and gold rings.

As always, Stella McCartney is committed to being leather, feather, fur and skin-free; all shoes and bags are vegan and cruelty-free. The collection is created with 80% eco-friendly materials including recycled polyester and elastane, organic cotton and linen, forest-friendly viscose, responsible and traceable wool, ECONYL® regenerated nylon, solvent-free PU, Alter Mat, Alter Teddy, Koba Fur Free Fur, aluminium and stainless steel chains with PVD coatings, sustainable beech wood and repurposed old-stock fabrics, pushing towards circularity.
